At The Power of Sports, we believe that every child should have the chance to experience the joy of sport—regardless of background, neighborhood, or financial means. That’s why we’re excited to support the introduction of field hockey into school settings across Curaçao.
We actively support local efforts to make hockey more visible and accessible. The initiative began when two of our volunteers, Sanne and Naomi, brought donated hockey sticks and gear from the Netherlands. Rather than setting up a stand-alone programme, we chose to use this equipment during existing physical education (PE) classes in local schools. This ensures that hockey becomes a natural part of the broader sports education children already receive.
In addition to working through schools, we also support the local hockey club by helping them provide training and outreach. Hockey is currently a sport with limited visibility on the island and is often perceived as something primarily played by members of the white or expat community. Our goal is to help change that image—by giving more children across Curaçao the opportunity to try the sport in an inclusive and familiar setting: their own school.
One major challenge is the lack of access to proper hockey equipment. There are no shops on the island where sticks, balls or protective gear can be purchased. That’s why the generous donations of hockey gear from the Netherlands have been so crucial. Thanks to these contributions, PE teachers and volunteers are now able to introduce hockey—even on simple concrete courts or schoolyards.
The response from children and teenagers has been overwhelmingly positive. For many, this is their first-ever encounter with hockey—and they’ve taken to the sport with energy, curiosity, and joy. It’s not about perfection or competition; it’s about discovering something new, playing together, and learning new skills.
By embedding hockey in school-based programmes and working alongside the existing hockey community on the island, The Power of Sports helps create bridges between different communities and backgrounds. Together with local partners, we’re proud to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse sports culture on Curaçao—one where every child feels welcome on the field.
